How do I Find My Perfect Padel Racket?

To help you with your choice, here is a summary of the essential criteria for padel rackets.

Level of Play

When buying a new padel racket, your player type and level of play are among the key aspects. Most manufacturers specify which level they designed the respective racket for. The same goes for padel balls, by the way. The distinction is usually between rackets for beginners and advanced players, with some manufacturers also making rackets that, particularly designed for pros. However, the distinction is not always that clear: some beginner's rackets are also well suited to advanced players, and vice versa. Rackets for pros, on the other hand, are rarely something for beginners. The main thing is that the racket you choose more or less fits your individual level of play.

Shape of the Racket

There are three basic shapes for padel rackets: diamond, round, and teardrop.

  • Diamond-shaped padel rackets increase your speed, which is why they especially attract players with an offensive drive.
  • Rather defensively oriented players use round rackets for more control in their game.
  • A good choice for all-rounders are teardrop-shaped padel rackets: the combination of round and diamond shape makes them ideal for the more balanced player.

Regarding the size and weight of padel rackets, the International Padel Federation has laid out some rules. A padel racket must, for example, have a maximum length of 46 centimetres, and its width must not exceed 26 centimetres. The maximum allowed frame thickness is 38 millimetres, while the weight is usually between 340 and 390 grams.

Weight & Density

Like in other racket sports, the weight of padel rackets varies. As a rule of thumb, lighter rackets (340 to 360 grams) make controlling the ball easier, but they do not generate as much power. Heavy padel rackets (370 to 390 grams), on the other hand, give your shots more power but make it harder to control the ball, which is why they better suit advanced and professional players. If you are looking for a good mix of power and control, mid-weight padel rackets between 360 and 370 grams are probably the right choice for you.

Another factor influencing the ratio between power and control is the density of a padel racket. The harder the racket, the more control you get––at the expense of power. And those who know what arm problems feel like will soon realise that a firm hitting surface absorbs less energy and thus puts more strain on the arm. A softer surface, on the other hand, absorbs more energy and protects the arm better. On top of that, you can generate more speed but lose a bit of control.

Sweet Spot

The term "sweet spot" describes the effective zone on the hitting surface of the racket. That means you get the optimum efficiency, i.e., the most energy transmitted to the ball when you hit the ball with the sweet spot. Padel rackets with a large sweet spot in the middle of the hitting surface provide excellent ball control. Those with a smaller sweet spot generate more power and speed, provided you hit the ball perfectly. If you don't, you lose a lot of control, precision and power. Therefore, we recommend padel rackets with a large sweet spot for beginners, whereas advanced players often use those with a smaller sweet spot. Apart from these two types, some padel rackets have an elliptic sweet spot. This combination of the variants mentioned above offers a good mix of control and power.

Balance

The weight distribution is another critical factor defining the playing characteristics of padel rackets. The balance point describes the area with the most weight. Generally, we distinguish between three balance points:

  • Low – weight slopes towards the handle, primarily round shape.
  • Medium – weight placed between the head and the handle, usually teardrop shape.
  • High – weight slopes towards the head, mostly diamond shape.

Low balance rackets with the weight distributed towards the handle are often easier to play because they don't require much strength to control the ball––to the detriment of the hitting power. High balance padel rackets, which are mostly diamond-shaped, on the other hand, enable you to generate a lot more speed. But at the expense of ball control, which is why they are better suited to advanced and professional players. Medium balance padel rackets––usually teardrop-shaped––make for a good, arm sparing compromise between power and control.
